Few people, unless they had babies in their lives, will remember the baby formula recall in 2022, or the resulting shortage that worried so many parents. It seems that the FDA knew that there was going to be a shortage, but the Biden Administration refused to listen or act. That caused issues for those families with the least access to choices for alternatives. It also shows how the Biden Administration keeps making sure the American people come last in every instance, as this could have harmed many more than it did.
What Happened
Here, via the FDA, is what occurred in 2022 with the baby formula situation.
Following the voluntary recall and hold of certain powdered infant formula products produced at the Abbott Nutrition facility in Sturgis, MI, Abbott has committed to completing enhanced testing of stored product batches prior to making release determinations. While the FDA recognizes that Abbott has conducted standard product testing, there were a limited number of samples tested. Additionally, although finished product testing does not eliminate the risk of contamination, the enhanced testing will provide for a greater chance to detect Cronobacter sakazakii, if present; however, this enhanced level of testing will take additional time.
In the meantime, the FDA has informed Abbott Nutrition that the agency has no objection to the company immediately releasing product to individuals needing urgent, life-sustaining supplies of the specialty and metabolic formulas listed below on a case-by-case basis. The FDA is concerned that the risk of not having certain specialty and metabolic products available could significantly worsen underlying medical conditions and in some cases pose life-threatening risks for infants and individuals who rely on these products. In these circumstances, the benefit of allowing parents, in consultation with their healthcare providers, to access these products may outweigh the potential risk of bacterial infection.
Biden Administration
Here, from a House Committee on Oversight and Accountability press release, is what Chairwoman Rep. Lisa McClain found via a records request.
Rep. McClain: “Commissioner Califf, you assumed the office of the Commissioner of the FDA in February of ’22. Correct?”
Commissioner Califf: “That’s correct.”
Rep. McClain: “When you assumed office, were you aware that a manufacturer who made more than forty percent of the country’s infant formula was voluntarily recalling all the baby formula it made at its Sturgis plant?”
Commissioner Califf: “I was very familiar because it happened on the day I was confirmed.”
Rep. McClain: “In the days and weeks that came after you assumed office, were you aware that there was a shortage of infant formula across the country?”
Commissioner Califf: “Well in the first days and weeks there wasn’t a shortage, but as the shortage evolved, I was very much aware of it.”
Rep. McClain: “Mr. Chairman, I’d like to enter into the record two internal email exchanges within the FDA. The first dated February 4th 2022 in which the FDA officials are discussing the potential for infant formula supply issues and asking for immediate support from the White House to educate the public. The second, on February 19th of 2022, in which the FDA officials were discussing the supply issues that were already happening. Despite these discussions within the FDA, media reports said the President was not aware of the problem even though it was headlining in nearly every news channel and every paper across the country for three months. My question is: Did the FDA not raise concerns about the potential shortage even before the recall.”
Commissioner Califf: “I can’t speak for before the recall but at about the time of the recall.”
Rep. McClain: “The FDA did in fact raise the issues to at least nine different White House officials and President Biden took no action.”
Rep. McClain: “Why did it take three months for President Biden to invoke the Defense Protection Act?”
Commissioner Califf: “I can’t speak for President Biden and that particular decision. […] This evolved over time so the exact time of when the DPA should have been brought in is something that’s a matter of discussion.”
Rep. McClain: “Either the FDA didn’t tell him, or he didn’t act. Which is it?”
Commissioner Califf: “I think you have the emails and I can’t really comment beyond that.”
The emails are in the press release, but it is a simple fact that the Biden Administration is too busy helping all other people but Americans. The Democrat economic plan is creating inflation at a point that people can barely live, but they keep pushing it. The Biden Administration is pushing for $15 an hour, though that makes less sense than the economic plans. All the while, they are allowing Americans to suffer in a myriad of ways every single day.
