Offshore fishing is a major industry in the United States, which is why offshore wind farms are a major concern because of scientific findings. The Biden Administration and other liberal individuals are attempting to find every manner to get these installed, but have been stopped more often than not because people do not want these turbines. There is also the fact that there are so many laws and regulations that hinder it, the costs before they are even built are rising astronomically.
Fishing Economics
Here, via Statista, is how much the fishing industry brings in.
“While those in the U.S. do not consume overwhelming amounts of seafood, the presence of such a large coast presents capture opportunity. Capture production in 2022 resulted in landings revenue of about 5.6 billion U.S. dollars for the seafood industry. In that same year, approximately 8.34 billion pounds of fish were caught in the United States. The major domestic species have included pollock, menhaden, salmon, hakes, and flatfish in recent years. The United States was ranked among the leading fish and fishery exporters worldwide in 2020.”
Impact on Fishing
Here, via Nature, is the scientific stance on offshore wind impact on fishing. There is a lot of hemming and hawing, which means they are trying to stay positive on an issue they do not know about.
“Despite the evident negative impacts of OWFs on ecosystem elements, potential positive impacts must also be highlighted. According to several authors, positive environmental impacts are linked to reserve and reef effects on the area of OWF deployment and mooring structures. These can function as artificial reefs and fish aggregation devices for small demersal fish, attracting more marine life than natural reefs. Evidence suggests that OWFs may enhance diversity in areas with homogeneous seabed. Also, the prohibition of bottom trawling near OWFs for safety reasons eliminates disturbance of fish, benthos, and benthic habitats, partially by providing protection from fishing. Findings suggest that negative impacts on fishing activities can be mitigated by spill-over effects due to increased catches (up to 7%, close to wind farms) and slight modifications in catch composition. Long-term monitoring and additional information on ecological processes influencing fish stock dynamics will further enable the demonstration of whether extra production at population level occurs.”
While this sounds mostly positive, the reaction from the Biden Administration shows we are probably not getting the full story. Here, via Reuters, is what the Administration plans to help the impact on fishing.
“The Biden administration is considering ways to ensure the U.S. commercial fishing industry is paid for any losses it incurs from the planned expansion of offshore wind power in the Atlantic Ocean, according to state and federal officials involved in the matter.”
“U.S. government researchers estimate that offshore wind projects could displace some commercial fisheries by as much as a quarter.”
"The administration’s new effort was prompted in part by a letter to Biden from nine coastal states last month urging the federal government to lead the way in crafting "mitigation frameworks for demonstrated negative impacts" on fisheries from offshore wind projects, according to the officials.”
While there is a need for more energy production in this nation, there needs to be a way to not increase national debt by trying to repay an industry for damage done to it. Offshore wind sounds good to the liberal side, but it is probably a good thing that laws are standing between them and uncharted waters that cause even scientists to make bet hedging statements. There comes a point when people need to realize that green energy does as much harm as any other source of power.
