There could be far more to think about with USDA wanting gardens registered than what most are talking about
The USDA under the Biden Administration restarted an Obama Administration initiative around October of 2022. It is called the People's Garden Initiative and has some interesting marketing and a fact on the page that makes one wonder about the agenda. Past the fact that registering a garden seems to be both a waste of federal resources and an intrusion, there are other implications that can make people leery of this. The entire program was not well thought out.
People's Garden
Here, via the USDA website, is what they say constitutes being able to register.
Do you have a community farm or garden that you’d like to designate a People’s Garden? Gardens of different sizes and types, including school gardens, community gardens, urban farms, and small-scale agriculture projects in rural and urban areas, can be recognized as a “People’s Garden.”
One of the problems of the naming of this is the symbolism that it brings in via how Mao reshaped China and preached constant revolution. The USDA does have an explanation, though, as will be seen throughout this article, it does not stand up as much. Here, via a second USDA page, is what they say is the reason for the name.
Originally launched in 2009 by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, The People’s Garden was named in honor of Abraham Lincoln who created the USDA and called it the “People’s Department”.
Odd Factoid
Here is the factoid that brings thoughts that there is more consideration with these gardens than stated.
Gardens on federal property must donate or use produce for educational purposes. We will provide an easy-to-use form to report how many pounds and what types of produce you’ve donated every six months.
One of the concerns that this brings about is dealing with the reasons for the Bundy Ranch Standoff in 2014. In the 50s or 60s, the Bundys and their neighbors bought a large piece of land together to help graze cattle. They knew there would be conflict if there was not someone helping, so they went to the local government, not state or federal, and asked them to administer the land. In the 70s, the federal government found out and took the land over. They charged so much money, that all but the Bundys were forced out. Whether it was for water rights, or some other issue, the government worked to destroy these families and their livelihoods.
Another Consideration
There are criminals that cross the border, being shipped all over the US by this Administration to locations that cause people to wonder why. There are maps on the USDA site that show where these gardens are, which could be harvested in secret by people needing food, such as these criminals. Taking of food out of these gardens would not make the news, unlike the squatter issue, so no person would notice other than the ones running the gardens.
This is meant to point out facts, but the entire initiative could be exactly what it says. The problem is, that too many people have been burnt by the government for there not to be some distrust. The facts here are real, but then again, the person who decided on the name could also have been a fan of The Rock and the People's Elbow. It does need to be monitored.
